Nelson Martinez, a 2019 graduate of Singley Academy, is set to compete for $10,000 and the title of best holiday cookie maker in the U.S. on the Food Network’s Christmas Cookie Challenge. His passion for baking, which began years ago, was nurtured in Singley’s culinary arts program. Martinez credits much of his success to Irving ISD educators like culinary instructor Jared Cappers and retired Chef Ann Lowrie, who played a pivotal role in his development. Ahead of his television debut, we caught up with Martinez to discuss his journey and the impact of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs in public schools.

To watch and cheer on Martinez, tune in to the Food Network on Thursday, December 19, at 8 PM CST. Mark your calendar!
