Nimitz High School senior Johnathan Petrosky was recently nominated by State Representative Terry Meza to receive a $60,000 scholarship through the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program (TASSP). This prestigious program encourages students to complete a bachelor’s degree and become a member of one of the following organizations:
- Texas Army National Guard
- Texas Air National Guard
- Texas State Guard
- United States Coast Guard
- United States Merchant Marine
- Or become a commissioned officer in any branch of the armed services of the United States
The TASSP scholarship is awarded based on academic and personal achievement. Recipients must be nominated by the Texas Governor, Lieutenant Governor, a state senator or state representative in order to qualify.
Petrosky credits the Nimitz Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program, led by Lt. Trevor Smalls, for his growth and looks forward to continuing his pursuit of a career in the military, thanks to the TASSP scholarship and Rep. Meza.
“I was given the opportunity to receive this scholarship because of my dedication to not just school but my goals of achievement. NJROTC has provided me with many experiences that have helped me grow and hone my traits of hard work and responsibility,” says Petrosky. “I’m also grateful for my NJROTC instructors because they genuinely care about me and have always done whatever it takes to see me succeed.”
