When Mithu Sau moved from east India to the United States in October 2022, she didn’t quite know what to expect when it came to the opportunities she’d be provided. Sau was an IT supervisor with more than 15 years of experience when she moved across the globe due to her husband’s job transfer. Despite her extensive experience in IT, Sau learned quickly that her academic credentials didn’t transfer to the US. While this information came as a surprise, it sparked her determination for a fresh start.

“I graduated with honors in India, so I was surprised to know that my degree and years of experience wouldn’t be recognized here,” says Sau. “Soon after, I learned about the Irving ISD Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program.”

The Irving ISD AEL program, which is state-funded in partnership with Texas Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas, has a variety of offerings and serves more than 500 adult learners. Students can take classes – free of cost – to obtain their GED and/or citizenship, learn English and earn various workforce certifications. Sau enrolled in the program last summer with goals to improve her English proficiency through the GED course so she can one day secure a work permit.

“I really like the AEL program,” she says. “The teachers, staff and my classmates have all been so helpful. They’re funny, supportive, and it’s nice to see their smiling faces during the week.”

Sau considers herself a life-long learner, and she doesn’t plan to stop after earning her GED. She dreams of going back to college to further her education. Throughout this journey, Sau credits her family for being a great support system, especially her son, Sarkar. Sarkar remains in India and works as an engineer. However, he and his mother are as close as ever – despite living countries apart.

“He’s my best friend,” Sau says about her son. “We talk all the time, and he’s been very supportive of my decision to advance my education.”

Outside of the classroom, Sau enjoys various hobbies including painting, gardening and cooking. Her favorite dish to make is fish curry – a recipe that makes her think of home.

Sau’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to pursue one’s dreams, no matter how unexpected the circumstances might be.
