Irving ISD visual arts students recently showcased their artistic talents in a regional competition hosted by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Transportation Department. Each year, the department partners with local schools to encourage student creativity while promoting awareness about regional transportation and planning. This year’s theme, “Dallas-Fort Worth: A Region of Choice”, was selected by Regional Transportation Council Chair and Dallas County Judge Clay Lewis Jenkins, who also recommended Irving ISD to participate.
Out of 30 entries from elementary, middle and high school students across the district, three standout pieces were selected as winners:
1st Place: Natasha Torres, 8th grade, De Zavala Middle School
Angela Ruvalcaba, Art Teacher
2nd Place: Eduardo Morales, 11th grade, Nimitz High School
Samuel Cavazos, Art Teacher
3rd Place: Loany Palma, 3rd grade, Johnston Elementary School
Heather McCarroll, Art Teacher
Torres earned a special honor for winning 1st place in the contest. Her artwork was featured on the cover of Progress North Texas, NCTCOG’s annual transportation report. The publication highlights key initiatives in transportation, air quality and regional planning throughout North Texas. In recognition of Torres’ achievement, she was presented with a framed copy of the report cover and awarded a $100 Visa gift card.
