Irving ISD has made history as the first school district in Texas to launch a new Fitness Court® at Nimitz High School with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, October 14, marking the district’s commitment to student and community wellness.
The project was made possible through a partnership between Irving ISD, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) and the National Fitness Campaign (NFC). The Fitness Court is a state-of-the-art outdoor gym that allows users to leverage their body weight for a full workout across seven exercise stations. Open to students, staff and community members ages 14 and up, the space promotes accessible and high-quality fitness opportunities for all.
Superintendent Magda A. Hernández highlighted the importance of wellness as part of the district’s culture.
“This ribbon cutting is not simply the unveiling of a space,” says Hernández. “It’s the celebration of a bold step forward for our students, families and entire city – a step toward breaking down barriers to wellness, building healthier lifestyles and making fitness truly accessible to all.”

Irving ISD officially opens its Fitness Court — the first in Texas by a school district.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, the Irving Schools Foundation, Pogue Construction, WRA, PBK and Huckabee were all recognized for their contributions to the project during the event. Irving ISD student-athletes later demonstrated the Fitness Court in action.
The new Fitness Court, located at Nimitz High School, 100 W. Oakdale Rd., Irving, is open for public use and includes access to the free Fitness Court App, which offers guided workouts and wellness programming.
