When Nimitz High School band student Joaquin Benitez was selected to perform in the Rose Parade this New Year in California, it was a moment worth celebrating. The honor placed him among a nationally selected group of student musicians and recognized years of his commitment, growth and leadership within the Nimitz band program.

Benitez has been involved with the band since sixth grade, after discovering Drum Corps International on YouTube and being inspired to pick up an instrument. Drum Corps International is well known for producing events for the world’s most elite and exclusive marching ensembles for student musicians and performers. What began as an interest quickly became a dedication. As a trombone player, he continually challenged himself to improve and to lead by example. During the most recent marching season, he served as a section leader, supporting his peers and setting expectations through preparation and consistency.

His dedication led him to one of the most recognizable stages in the country. Performing in the Rose Parade is an opportunity reserved for students who demonstrate musical excellence and strong character and have earned their place through years of steady progress. Reflecting on the experience, Benitez says, “It feels good to have these accomplishments and represent Irving ISD as a student who is capable of great things.”

For Nimitz band director Nathan Ewing, Benitez’s success is no surprise. Having worked with him since seventh grade, Ewing has watched his talent and work ethic develop year after year.

“I remember working with Joaquin even back in seventh and eighth grade and knowing there was something special there,” Ewing says. “It’s incredible to see what students are capable of when they commit and trust the process.”

In addition to the Rose Parade honor, Benitez has advanced through numerous regional competitions and recently earned All-State recognition, achievements driven by persistence and personal motivation. His journey reflects what is possible when students fully invest in their craft and take ownership of their growth.

For Benitez, performing on a national stage is also an opportunity to represent Irving ISD and highlight the strength of its fine arts programs. His experience shows that Irving ISD students are prepared to rise to the highest levels when given the opportunity.

From daily rehearsals to a world-famous parade route, Joaquin Benitez’s story is a celebration of earned success, commitment and pride in representing Irving ISD.
