Irving High School’s Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator, Brent Nickerson, has been named the Dallas Cowboys Whataburger Coach of the Week. This honor recognizes his leadership on and off the field.

Coach Nickerson, a proud graduate of Irving ISD schools, has spent more than a decade developing student-athletes with lessons that go far beyond football. A graduate of MacArthur High School who also attended Johnston Elementary and Houston Middle School, Nickerson started his career in the district in 2013 at MacArthur before taking on his current role at Irving High three years ago.

“This honor is truly humbling,” says Nickerson. “It represents the hard work of our coaches, players, athletic trainers and community who have invested so much in our program. It highlights the growth, resilience and character of our players and shines a light on the positive culture we are building at Irving High.”

In August 2025, Irving ISD was named a Texas Way District of Distinction by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association (THSADA). This recognition celebrates Irving ISD’s athletic programs, and with community support from individuals like Coach Nickerson, Irving ISD remains strong in sportsmanship. More importantly, the athletics program emphasizes discipline, character and leadership, raising the standards for student-athletes across the campus.

Nickerson also shared advice he hopes will inspire students across Irving ISD: “Control what you can control — your attitude, effort and commitment. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but with consistency, discipline and a willingness to grow, you can achieve more than you ever thought possible.”

He credits much of the team’s progress to the overwhelming support of the Irving community. “From administration to teachers, parents and alumni, everyone plays a role in encouraging and uplifting our student-athletes. Their support reminds our players that they are part of something bigger than themselves.”

Coach Nickerson expressed gratitude to the Dallas Cowboys, Whataburger and the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Foundation for the recognition. “This award is about more than football — it’s about relationships, character and the impact athletics can make on young people’s lives.”
