For the third year in a row, Irving ISD has been recognized as a District of Distinction by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA). This places the district among the top 8 percent of school districts in the state for excellence in visual arts education.

The District of Distinction Award honors districts that integrate high-quality visual arts curriculum to inspire creativity, foster social-emotional learning and connect students to their communities. Out of more than 1,200 eligible districts across Texas, only 109 earned this year’s distinction.

Superintendent of Schools Magda A. Hernández says the award is a reflection of the extraordinary work happening in classrooms across the district.

“Irving ISD is deeply committed to ensuring our students have access to high-quality visual arts education from PreK through 12th grade,” says Hernández. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our talented students and teachers. I could not be more proud of the creativity, passion and hard work that continue to shine throughout our district.”

Irving ISD’s Director of Visual Arts Gayla Lawrence says the award speaks volumes about both the students and teachers who make the program so strong.

“This award is such a great testimony to the creative talents of our students and the leadership of our visual arts teachers,” says Lawrence. “The teachers provide exceptional experiences, and our students follow through with incredible products and projects. The arts enrich our student’s educational experience and allow them to positively connect with our campuses and community.”

TAEA is the largest state professional organization for art educators in the United States, and the leading advocate for the visual arts in the state. It is the mission of TAEA to promote quality visual arts education through leadership, advocacy, service and professional development. Irving ISD and other winners will be honored at the TAEA Fall Conference on Friday, November 21, in Round Rock.
